About India Meteorological Department (IMD)

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), established in 1875, is the principal national agency for meteorological observation and weather forecasting in India. Operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, IMD plays a crucial role in providing critical weather-related information and warnings. It monitors atmospheric conditions, tracks monsoons, and provides daily weather forecasts for different sectors like agriculture, aviation, shipping, etc and disaster management. The department also issues early warnings for extreme weather events, such as cyclones, heatwaves, coldwaves, thunderstorm & lightning and floods, helping to minimize loss of life and property. With a network of observatories, satellites, and radars, IMD's services are indispensable for various sectors of the Indian economy.

In 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) will celebrate 150 years of its establishment on 15th January, marking a remarkable journey of scientific innovation and public service. Over the decades, IMD has grown from a small observational network to a global leader in meteorological science, contributing significantly to India's disaster resilience and sustainable development. This milestone highlights its enduring commitment to excellence, from predicting the intricate patterns of the monsoon to addressing emerging challenges like climate change. To mark this extraordinary achievement, IMD has planned a series of events during the year commencing from 15th January 2024 and continuing through to the grand foundation day celebration on January 15, 2025 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

About the National Meteorology Olympiad

As part of the 150th Foundation Day celebrations, IMD is conducting the National Meteorological Olympiad (Met-Olympiad) in association with the South Asian Meteorological Association (SAMA) and the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS). The Met-Olympiad aims to foster enthusiasm and awareness about weather and climate sciences among young students across the nation. This competition will provide an opportunity for students to test their knowledge, participate in engaging challenges, and learn more about the science of meteorology. The Olympiad will target students from classes 8th, 9th, and 11th, conducted at state and national levels.

The state winners from every state and union territory (UT), as well as the national winner, will be recognized for their accomplishments. The winners will also have the opportunity to participate in a one-day workshop and the 150th Foundation Day celebrations of IMD at New Delhi on 15th January 2025, in the presence of esteemed dignitaries.
