The India Meteorological Department has been publishing the quarterly research journal "MAUSAM regularly since January 1950. It is a premier Indian scientific research journal in Meteorology and allied sciences and holds a prestigious position among contemporary scientific journals.

Soon after Independence, the India Meteorological Department, during the tenure and under the leadership of Dr. S. K. Banarji as the then Director General, launched a first issue quarterly scientific journal named “Indian Journal of Meteorology & Geophysics” in 1950 to provide a medium for publication of meteorological and allied research in India.

Twenty-five years later, in 1975, it became the 'Indian Journal of Meteorology, Hydrology & Geophysics'. Further, in 1979, it was renamed 'MAUSAM'. It has been published regularly since its inception. It is the only scientific research journal published in this part of the world in the field of Meteorology and allied subjects. It commands a prestigious position among the leading contemporary scientific journals.

It is also to be noted that the first paper on Numerical Weather Prediction in India was published in “Mausam” in 1958 by Dr. P. K. Das. To encourage the best research work, a Biennial Mausam Award (prize in the form of a Gold medal or cash) for the best research paper published every two years was started with effect from 1960 initially with the name Indian Journal of Meteorology and Geophysics (IJMG) awards. The Journal also publishes special issues on selected topics of emerging importance, and so far, 28 issues have been published up to 2024.

MAUSAM has been indexed in many scientific index agencies and has continuously increased its Impact Factor since 2008.

As a part of R&D, IMD encourages the publication of the quarterly journal MAUSAM. The international research journal MAUSAM (formerly Indian Journal of Meteorology, Hydrology & Geophysics) has completed 75th year of its publications and has been made online (https://mausamjournal.imd.gov.in/index.php/MAUSAM) since 2021. Since then, the journal has been making its way to advancement in the world of scientific journals, reaching an Cite Score of 1.2 in 2023 as per Scopus. All the research articles (since the origin of ‘MAUSAM,’ 1950) have been uploaded on the website with Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).
