Logo Design for IMD
Being established in 1875, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is completing 150 years of service to the nation on 15th January 2025. IMD is among the earliest government departments in India created specifically for systematic observation, regular monitoring, and forecasting of weather phenomena in the Indian subcontinent. In a way, evolution of Meteorology as a stream of modern physical science, owes a lot to the contribution made by IMD employees in particular and meteorological fraternity in general including scientists, technologists, and administrators/managers who were associated with IMD during its glorious hundred fifty years of journey.
To commemorate the milestone of 150 years, IMD is organising a yearlong activities starting January 2024. During this period, IMD will launch a series of events, exhibitions, and national and international scientific workshops/conferences besides interactive sessions with students to encourage them to explore meteorology and atmospheric sciences.
To aptly describe this important milestone, IMD, in collaboration with MyGov hosted a Logo Design Contest for the 150th year of IMD. On September 26, 2023, the IMD under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) launched a Logo Design competition. As part of this competition, citizens shared logo designs that highlighted the importance of IMD weather and climate services. The competition received an overwhelming response from citizens across the country, with over 517 valid entries out of 691 submissions.
The entries were evaluated by a selection committee of experts who judged them based on the elements of creativity, innovation, and content. The winners of this competition were felicitated with prizes and certificates on the occasion of World Meteorological Day on 22nd March 2024.
Shri. Kiren Rijiju, Hon'ble Ministry of Earth Sciences, launched the Logo for the 150th year celebration of IMD in a ceremony organized by IMD on 26th December 2023 at 12:00 PM in the Mahika Hall of MoES.
Theme Song on IMD ( कूल गीत )
Being established in 1875, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is completing 150 years of service to the nation on 15th January 2025. IMD is among the earliest government departments in India created specifically for systematic observation, regular monitoring, and forecasting of weather phenomena in the Indian subcontinent. In a way, evolution of Meteorology as a stream of modern physical science, owes a lot to the contribution made by IMD employees in particular and meteorological fraternity in general including scientists, technologists, and administrators/managers who were associated with IMD during its glorious hundred fifty years of journey.
To commemorate the remarkable 150 years journey of IMD, in collaboration with MyGov, IMD announced the Theme Song Contest on 16th November 2023. We invited musicians, songwriters, and composers across India to create a theme song that echoes IMD's legacy, dedication, and services. This competition offered a unique opportunity to weave together the threads of weather and climate services with music. IMD requested the participants to include the vision and mission of IMD in the theme song.
The Vision of IMD:
- No weather hazard should go undetected and unpredicted.
- Meteorological observation and forecast for optimum operation of weather-sensitive activities and hence to enable enhancement in economy.
- Weather and climate services for management of natural resources like agriculture, forestry, and water resources.
The Missions of IMD:
- To take meteorological observations and to provide current and forecast meteorological information for optimum operation of weather-sensitive activities like agriculture, irrigation, shipping, aviation, offshore oil explorations, etc.
- To warn against severe weather phenomena like tropical cyclones, norwesters, dust-storms, heavy rains and snow, cold and heat waves, etc., which cause destruction of life and property.
- To provide meteorological statistics required for agriculture, water resource management, industries, oil exploration, and other nation-building activities.
- To conduct and promote research in meteorology and allied disciplines.
The theme song contest closed on 15th December 2023. A total of 26 entries were submitted. IMD and MyGov thanked all the participants for their enthusiasm and encouraged them to continue taking part in such future activities.
With the above inputs, IMD composed a theme song through outsourcing agencies. It included various elements such as writing or correcting lyrics, musical composition with musicians, a music director, choruses, recording, videography and editing, etc.
Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar ji, Hon'ble Vice President of India, launched the Theme Song of IMD at the Inaugural Ceremony for the Foundation Day of India Meteorological Department on 15th January 2024 in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
