A class II Meteorological Observatory at Raipur was established on 1.1.1870 for taking observation of Raipur.
Upgraded to Class III observatory in 1889 and then further upgraded to class II on 16.11.1929, class II (a) on 1.2.1949 and class I on 31.1.1966.
The RS/RW observation of upper atmosphere was started at Raipur in November 1993.
After formation of Chhattisgarh State it was finally upgraded to Meteorological Centre (M.C.) on 1.6.2002 as forecasting office for Chhattisgarh state.
The weather forecasting and Agricultural Advisory Services were started in June and October respectively in the year 2002 after formation of M.C.Raipur in Chhattisgarh state.
To collect the weather data of Raipur directly through satellite the Automatic Weather System (A.W.S.) was installed in April 2006.
The district level Agro-Advisory Services was introduced from 1st June 2008.
Aviation forecast for Raipur were earlier initiated from Meteorological Centre Bhopal and A.M.O. Nagpur. The independent weather forecasting (General and Aviation) was started at Met. Centre Raipur from 01st February 2009.
Services Provided :
General weather forecast, Daily weather summary and bad weather warnings are issued for public, which are disseminated through All India Radio, Doorsarshan, News papers and various local TV channels.
All aviation and non-aviation weather forecast for Chhattisgarh region is issued by Met Centre Raipur.
District level Agro-Advisory service is provided for farmers with coordination with state Agriculture Department and Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya Raipur.
All observatory in Chhattisgarh namely Seismological Office Bilaspur, M.O. Pendra Road, M.O. Jagdalpur, M.O. Ambikapur and several part time observatories are monitored by Met Centre Raipur.
Collection and dispatch of rainfall data of District wise Rainfall Measuring Station (DRMS) are done for Chhattisgarh state.
Objectives :
To take meteorological observations and to provide current and past meteorological information, current weather and weather forecasts on various temporal and spatial scale for optimization of resources for weather-sensitive activities like agriculture, irrigation, aviation, power plants, planning, industrial operations, tourism, disaster management and other activities.
To record meteorological observations (surface, radar, radiation and upper atmosphere) of the Chhattisgarh state on different temporal and spatial scale through the manned / unmanned observatories and also to provide the current weather observations of all airports of the state.
To provide nowcast, short range and medium range weather forecasts and other information to the users for aviation and non-aviation purpose.
To communicate the current and past meteorological information, forecast products and warnings to the public, aviation, industry, agriculture, tourism sector, Railways, defence forces, Chhattisgarh Government and its concerned bodies etc.

Providing QPF forecast of the catchments areas and formulate/disseminate a Hydromet Bulletin, Daily Rainfall Data and Flood Situation to concerned agencies like concerned State Government authorities, CWC, Flood Control Room, Defence, Railways etc. during monsoon season in the state of Chhattisgarh.
Conducting applied meteorological research for advance scientific understanding of weather and climate.
Quarterly / Annual / five-year inspection of all the departmental / non departmental observatories, AWS / ARG and manual rain gauge stations in state to maintain the quality of meteorological observations.
