The Meteorological Centre Lucknow celebrated the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) by organizing a landmark Stakeholders Workshop on January 2, 2025, at Hotel Holiday Inn, Lucknow. This event brought together over 50 participants, including experts, policymakers, and representatives from critical sectors such as agriculture, disaster management, water resources, and aviation, to discuss recent advancements in weather and climate services for Uttar Pradesh. The workshop aimed to strengthen collaboration between IMD and its stakeholders while addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change.The event began with an inaugural session, featuring a ceremonial lighting of the lamp, Saraswati Vandana, and the IMD theme song. Dr. Manish R. Ranalkar, Scientist-F & Head of MC Lucknow, welcomed the dignitaries and participants, followed by an inaugural address by Dr. R. K. Jenamani, Additional DG, IMD, New Delhi. Dr. M. Mohapatra, DGM, IMD, delivered a keynote address highlighting IMD’s evolution since its establishment in 1875 and its contributions to various sectors through initiatives like "Mission Mausam" and the household-focused "Har Har Mausam Ghar Ghar Mausam." He emphasized IMD's ongoing efforts to improve weather forecasting and observational networks while tailoring its services to meet stakeholders’ needs across the country.The Chief Guest, Shri G. S. Naveen Kumar (IAS), Secretary, Irrigation and Water Resources, Uttar Pradesh, applauded IMD for its vital contributions to sectors increasingly affected by climate change. He emphasized that IMD’s legacy demonstrates how science, technology, and governance can work together to build a sustainable future. Notable highlights of the event included the release of MC Lucknow's first Hindi magazine, Kshitiz, the inauguration of the MAHAKUMBHA MELA-2025 Weather Webpage, and the launch of an Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS).During the technical sessions, Dr. R. K. Jenamani presented an overview of IMD’s weather and climate services, followed by a presentation from Shri G. S. Naveen Kumar on weather monitoring and forecasting services in Uttar Pradesh. Several stakeholders provided valuable suggestions to enhance IMD's offerings. Smt. Akansha Pandey, Assistant Professor, Defense University, proposed student internship programs and joint seminars to promote knowledge-sharing on weather monitoring and early warning systems. Shri Harendra Yadav, Additional SP, SDRF, highlighted the need for district-specific real-time weather data, simplified public information, and IMD’s participation in disaster preparedness drills. Ms. Anushka Pandey, Program Manager, Crop Weather Watch Group, requested IMD's active involvement in weekly crop monitoring meetings. Shri Vikas Barbele, Assistant Director, Central Water Commission, stressed the importance of accessing Nepal’s rainfall data through IMD to improve flood predictions in border areas.The workshop concluded with expressions of gratitude by Mohammad Danish, Scientist-D, who acknowledged the contributions of dignitaries, media, and stakeholders in advancing meteorological science and fostering collaboration for socio-economic development. The event underscored IMD’s pivotal role in addressing climate-related challenges, enhancing resilience, and strengthening its services through stakeholder engagement and technological innovation.
