Stakeholder Workshop on 22nd November 2024 at Hyderabad

A meeting with stakeholders was conducted by Dr. K. Naga Ratna, Scientist-F and Head, Meteorological Centre Hyderabad on November 22, 2024, at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) auditorium, Ameerpet, Hyderabad, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad. The Chief Guest for the event was Shri A.V. Ranganath, IPS, Commissioner of HYDRAA, Disaster Management, and Fire GHMC, Telangana. Dr. M. Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, IMD, presided over the function, while Dr. S. Balachandran, Head of RMC Chennai, monitored the proceedings and provided an overview of the weather services rendered by the RMC. Approximately 160 participants attended, representing various stakeholder agencies, including the Department of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, Horticulture, School Education, Health, and Family Welfare, along with the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Director of Groundwater, Public Health, and the DG Fire Services. Other attendees included representatives from GHMC, Rural Water Supply, the Telangana State Development Planning Society, UNICEF, and farmers from different districts. 20 Members of the electronic and print media also participated, actively seeking information on weather and climate. Nearly all the staff of the MC Hyderabad and 35 retired staff have participated in this stakeholders meeting. The event began with a warm welcome address by Dr. K. Naga Ratna, Scientist-F and Head of the Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad. A souvenir and a Telugu booklet on the "Do’s and Don’ts" of seasonal weather phenomena were released, along with an outdoor display installed at the Begumpet Meteorological Centre for public information, inaugurated by Shri A.V. Ranganath, IPS. During the inaugural session, Dr. M. Mohapatra presented a brief overview of IMD’s milestones and emphasized forecasting services and extreme weather event management. Shri A.V. Ranganath acknowledged the IMD’s vital role in disaster management and stressed the importance of real-time, location-based forecasting for the public and stakeholders. Felicitations of key dignitaries followed, concluding with a vote of thanks by Dr. A. Dharma Raju, Scientist-C, MC Hyderabad. The workshop included two technical sessions with 12 presentations and brief talks by other stakeholders and few universities. The first session, chaired by Dr. Rajji Reddy, Vice Chancellor of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University, and Dr. Rama Rao, IMD,Retd., began with a presentation by Dr. S. Balachandran on IMD’s weather and climate services and its new initiatives to enhance forecasting capabilities. This was followed by a presentation by Dr. K. Naga Ratna, and further presentations by stakeholders, including Dr. Gowtham from TGSDMA, representatives from the Agricultural Department, Central Water Commission, GKMS, Telangana State Police, and CRIDA. Each stakeholder discussed the services they provide using IMD forecasts, shared feedback, and outlined future expectations. The second session was chaired by Shri Y.K. Reddy, IMD,Retd., and Dr.Shri AVM Subba Rao from CRIDA. Presentations were delivered by Dr. K. Subramanian (NRSC), the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, UNICEF, the Central Groundwater Board (T. Raja Babu), the Geological Survey of India (Dr. K.V. Maruthi), the Telangana State Groundwater Department (Ravi Kumar), and Anurag University (Dr. Pavitra). Discussions included feedback from farmers on the utility of value-added forecasts and the need for more effective dissemination. A panel discussion addressed questions from stakeholders about forecast accuracy, extreme weather events, climate change, and IMD initiatives like Mission Mausam. Dr. Mohapatra and senior IMD scientists responded to queries, and recommendations were made for improving services. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. A. Sravani, Scientist-D, MC Hyderabad. Followed by the Felicitations to the all the retired colleagues of IMD Hyderabad. Nearly 35 Retired staff of MC Hyderabad have been felicitated. Dr. M. Mohapatra, DGM shared his memories with them and honoured them. Dr. S. Balachandran, DDGM(RMC Chennai) and Dr. K. Naga Ratna, Head, MC Hyderabad also participated in this.
