About the Speaker:
Dr CHAN Pak-wai has been working in the Hong KongObservatory (HKO) for more than 30 years, with research andoperational efforts in the Hong Kong International Airport onmeteorological instrumentation, low-level windshear and turbulencealerting, and high-resolution numerical weather prediction. Dr Chanis the developer of the world-first LIDAR windshear alerting systemfor the airport. He also introduced a dropsonde measurement systemfor the northern part of the South China Sea to improve monitoringcapabilities of tropical cyclones. Dr Chan is committed to promotingthe application of artificial intelligence in meteorological researchand weather forecasting, and enhancing forecasting capacities ofsevere weather. Dr Chan has been involved actively in the work of theWorld Meteorological Organization (WMO) and International CivilAviation Organization (ICAO) over the years. He is currently co-Vice-President of the Commission for Observation, Infrastructureand Information Systems of WMO, making him the first Asian totake up a leadership position in the Commission. Dr Chan is also theChairperson of the Meteorology Sub-Group of Asia Pacific Region ofICAO to facilitate the implementation of aeronautical meteorologicalservices in the region.
